Bourton-on-the-Water, Lower and Upper Slaughter

A couple of old friends and I chose the Cotswolds village of Bourton-on-the-Water for a catch-up day during my recent English expedition.

It's an extraordinarily attractive little place, as is the norm around there. We checked out a few of its specific tourist attractions, like the motor museum and the maze, and the amazing pie-and-pastie shop. Then we moved up the road a little to the Slaughters.

These are a couple of smaller villages, with a pleasant walking track between them, and sights like this old mill at Lower Slaughter.

This is Upper Slaughter.

England still has lots of its old red telephone boxes. But what you tend to find in them these days are defribillators, not phones.

Speaking of defibrillators, here are two old fogies doing their impressions of the elderly Prince Charles and Lady Diana re-enacting their local walkabout in 1981.

Back in Lower Slaughter the royal couple sat down with a beer to discuss Brexit. 'Diana' is passionately pro-Europe, and 'Charles' pro-Brexit, so fireworks were anticipated.

But no, the friendship was stronger than that. Mr Europe tried his best, with detailed arguments and a bit of finger tapping. But Mr Brexit sat back and smiled. By the body language, I think the Brexits have it. And no slaughter took place.
