Lithgow's Exhibition Pagoda

On the way back from Canowindra last week we called in on the 'Exhibition Pagoda' exhibition in Lithgow's Gang Gang gallery.

It's a collection of photos, watercolours, and an amazingly 3D collection of fabric landscape chunks, titled 'Gardens of Stone'. They're based on actual pagoda rock formations in the Gardens of Stone area, and the exhibition is in support of the push for an enlarged Gardens of Stone national park. Lithgow could benefit greatly from such a park, and the niche tourist industry that it could support.

The exhibition is on display Thursdays to Sundays, until 20 June. The real pagodas will be on display for much much longer, we hope, a few kilometres to the north.

Crisscross Spur and the Five Ladies

Another epic walk by my Thursday Survey bushwalking adventure group.

Crisscross Spur and the Five Ladies are spectacular and scenic land formations within the Blue Mountains National Park. (Despite the sign in the picture about the Wollemi wilderness - the Wollemi NP is a few kilometres further north). We're about 20km north-east of Clarence, and approached via the Glowworm Tunnel Road and Waratah Ridge Road.

Leader Harold, pointing out the Five Ladies from Crisscross Spur.

We hit upon a viable way down off Crisscross Spur, to the fire trail below, and continued on to the Five Ladies.

The Five Ladies are a series of excellent pagoda-rich rocky hilltops. We clambered up and over every one of them. Here we are having lunch on Number 2 Lady.

This fine dining table formation was atop the fifth one.

Everywhere you look, it's wild pagoda country.

Bushwalkers bush-bash to Bell's Barnacles

Another new destination (for me) in the unique pagoda formation country a couple of hours north west of Sydney.

We went the other day to the Barnacles, a pair of parallel ridges in the Blue Mountains National Park. You start at the truck checking station at Bell, then bush-bash a few kilometres north and east along various ridge tops, using careful navigation.

It's a satisfying sort of walk. A well defined destination, some fine scenery, those navigational challenges, and at the moment at least, not too overgrown (because of the big 'State Mine' fire of three and a bit years ago). So it's not too exhausting a day out.

I'll go back on a sunny day sometime. It'll be quite spectacular then.

About to ascend onto the western ridge.

Emerging from the slot.

Looking across to the eastern ridge.
