Graz and a fine old clock tower

Austria's second city, Graz, is dominated by its fine old clock tower. It peers down from its perch on Schlossberg ('Castle Hill'), with its hour hands unconventionally longer than its minute hands. It's been up there since the 13th or 18th centuries (depending on whose website you trust).

I've been visiting Graz since my early childhood, and and it's always been a sacred part of the routine: a trip up Schlossberg, admire the clock tower, have a sausage and sauerkraut lunch, or maybe an elaborate ice cream.

You can walk up the hill, or you can take the funicular railway. This time we found there was even a modern lift to take you up. In fact they seemed to have hidden the signs to funicular, and people were effectively shepherded into the lift. It was built into a long, horizontal tunnel. I just read that there is a maze of tunnels under Schlossberg, dating back to World War 2.
