Rainbow Village

On the outskirts of Taiwan's Taichung city is a funny little tourist attraction called Rainbow Village.

That's not Rainbow in the sense of same-sex marriage. Though Taiwan did make the news earlier this year by becoming the first Asian country to allow it.

Rainbow Village is actually a village that was saved from the property developers, by an elderly resident and artist, Huang Yong Fu. He painted the whole village with brightly coloured
murals, thus giving the place new value. Maybe we could try this one in Sydney too?

Night market

Taichung's Feng Chia night market, said to be the city's best and busiest. As luck would have it, it was just around the corner from where I was staying.

Parks of Taichung

Taichung is the city about halfway down the west coast. It's got about 3 million people and it's Taiwan's second city.

I started my hiking adventure there, and had a couple of days to spare, exploring the place.

Here are a couple of pictures of the centrally located Taichung Park.

And this is an interesting one: The Taichung Broadcasting Bureau, which has a scenic little public park attached to it. The building now houses a museum. It was built in the 1930s for the sole purpose of providing the Japanese in Taichung with a live broadcast of the coronation of Emperor Hirohito.

Below: the Maple Garden, an attractive new waterside park a few kilometres north west from the main station.
